Is networking important in the new normal?
By Fiona Anderson, Company Director, www.gecpr.co.uk
So, 2022 is with us, and the UK is cautiously stepping out of the starting blocks into post-pandemic recovery, so should small business owners and entrepreneurs be thinking about getting out and networking again? And should networking be part of the ‘new normal’? It’s a firm yes from me, and here’s why…
Networking is key to build a successful business
Some of the best business advice I was given from an industry veteran when starting up my PR agency GEC PR four years ago was to network like crazy. I did think this was probably not one of the most important things to get on with during my first year of business, but I’m pleased to say I was proved wrong. At an industry event a few months later, I asked an owner of a large fleet of taxis for some sage business advice, and again he vouched for networking. To quote: “Your network is your net worth”.
So, why do I agree with this networking advice?
The last 20 months has been beyond challenging for PR and indeed all small businesses and entrepreneurs. And I believe my business is still thriving because of my network… Referrals from old clients to new ones; Projects and campaigns being signed off by people who know me, my agency, and the results of our work; Contacts I have made at virtual events who have reached out to me later on through LinkedIn and recommended me to their personal acquaintances… Networking has undoubtedly been my agency’s main new business funnel in these challenging times.
Reaching out to people on LinkedIn doesn’t cost anything. Many trade events are virtual and low cost at the moment, so when cash flow is lean, networking is a cost-effective marketing tool.
Networking gets the creative juices flowing
Other people have a different perspective to you and so I find networking can be a great source of creative inspiration.
As face-to-face events return, networking is a great way to meet like-minded entrepreneurs who can commiserate with you over the pain of setting up or running a business throughout the pandemic. So, here’s to the return of real life, not screen life!
Finally, networking can be a source of fun! Sick of the sight of your four walls, partner or family? Well networking is a great way to connect with new people and places!
Why not start building your network with WinTrade Global right now? Meet like-minded individuals during our networking sessions. The next one is on Wednesday, 26th January right after the WinTrade Global Talk with UK Secretary of State, Kwasi Kwarteng.
