Since April 2021, we have seen an unprecedented wave of resignation, dubbed the Great Resignation. According to the latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics, showed that more than 4.5 million Americans, or 3% of the workforce, voluntarily quit their jobs.

The millions of people who left their job altogether had good reason, some noting COVID concerns, retiring early, living on savings, and a significant factor, that people stopped being afraid to quit.

Great Resignation or Great Renegotiation?

Goldman Sachs estimates that a million people will come back into the workforce this year, raising the workforce rate slightly but still a substandard 62.6% by the end of the year.

There’re divided viewpoints on whether the recent high turnover in employees is indeed a problem at all or an opportunity to renegotiate the once static and seemingly unchangeable areas of work.

Now more than ever, attracting top talent is proving to be a challenge.

It's safe to say people aren't returning to the wages and work-life imbalance they left. Millions of those 'quitters' didn’t leave the workforce; they upgraded. Women have left in droves for better treatment, better schedules, and better benefits.

With such an imbalance between employers looking to hire and workers looking for an upgrade, this creates the perfect space for the employee-led negotiation era to bloom. Women are more than ever in the position of power to make the terms and conditions of their idealised work-life alignment rather than accept the substandard lifestyles of the past.

How To Negotiate Your Work-Life Alignment

Get Crystal Clear on Your Purpose

The first step to negotiating is understanding what's important to you in terms of personal and professional interests. Take time to freely reflect and explore your values, passion, hobbies, and desires and jot down everything real to you. No need to filter or censor your purpose based on skills and experiences you already have.

Assess your Current Work Set-Up

Ask yourself what’s missing or not working with your employment conditions. Starter questions to ask are:

  1. What aspects of my work excite me?
  2. What areas of my work demotivate me?
  3. What am I wanting more of that I’m not getting?
  4. How much money do I desire to make?
  5. What type of environment works for me?

Map Out Your Work-Life Alignment

Once you have figured out the above points, apply a strategy. An effective tool is to do a SWOT analysis mind map while keeping in mind the following:

  1. Breakdown your purpose
  2. Identify the top 3 priorities in each category
  3. Assign goals and deadlines

Create Congruency in Communication

Before you go to the negotiation table, check that you are communicating with congruence, essentially that your verbal and non-verbal gestures line up. As an NLP practitioner, I see many clients who desire change, but their non-verbal cues show conformity. Fortunately, with NLP tools, this can be put to rest and eliminate miscommunication once and for all.

Let Purpose Pay You

At this point, you are ready to negotiate with a purpose-led clarity.

Food for Thought

Remember, we each have 24 hours in a day and choose how to spend it. If your job is not fulfilling or not working for you, now is the prime time to change and let purpose pay you. You can either live with the tension of the never-ending quest to balance your work-life commitments or align yourself and redesign the work-life alignment filled with purpose, passion, and happiness.
